Twilight Covening in Autumn

Twilight Covening
October 6 - 9, 2017

In the twilight of the year, we gather together to set time apart from our daily lives for study, reflection, dreaming, and seeking visions.

A time apart.
Feel the current of change
As the season turns.
Flow with the tide.
Find yourself held in community,
Honoring the spirit of the Earth.
Breathe in the cool crisp air
Cross the bridge from autumn
Into the dark of winter.
Step into a three-day ritual of deep spiritual connection, learning and magic.

Twilight Covening is a continuous  3-day ritual which holds and shapes an institute of Earth spirituality and a time to develop our collective wisdom in a shared sacred space as we move into the dark time of the year.

Each year since 1986, members of the EarthSpirit Community gather deep into ourselves and into communion with this time of year and with all of Nature. We explore the depths of a range of spiritual practices, learn new skills together and experience the joy and power of a living community ritual. We invite you to join us.

Twilight Covening is held in the autumn during the strong natural transition taking place all around us from light into dark, summer into winter, and outward focus to inward contemplation. During the gathering, we use this current of change, along with our focused practices, to find inspiration and insight that can feed us in the dark months to come and motivate us to make changes that we can use to deepen our own spiritual practice.

The intensive work of Twilight Covening takes place in practice-specific Clans of 10-20 people and in full-community rituals that flow together through the weekend.

The rituals include:

  • Releasing Fire Ritual on Friday night,
  • Rituals for Dreaming, Healing and Trance on Saturday night,
  • A Visioning Ritual on Sunday night
  • Four "Attunements" each day which mark the solar quarters of the day

Many participants have found that Twilight Covening provides a model for maintaining an earth-centered practice on a daily basis and is a wonderful opportunity for developing strong and lasting connections with others on a similar path.

The Director

Deirdre Pulgram ArthenDeirdre Arthen, a witch for almost 40 years, loves creating different kinds of gateways along the boundary between the seen world and the unseen and sharing the experience of passing through those gateways with her community. Deirdre is the Executive Director of EarthSpirit and partner in Tamelin Productions with Andras Corban Arthen. She coordinates Twilight Covening, selecting and overseeing all of the clan leaders and shaping the ritual content for the weekend.

Candle LabyrinthChoosing your Twilight Covening Clan

Make sure that you read over all of the Clan descriptions carefully. There are many wonderful possibilities. On your registration form, you will need to list four Clans as possible choices for the weekend. We will try to give everyone their first or second choice, but it is important that you indicate four preferences since we assign the Clans primarily on a first-come first-served basis and some will fill up quickly.

Number your preferences from 1 to 4, with 1 being your first choice. Registration forms which are filled out incompletely will only delay processing time, making it less likely that first choices will be available. So that Clan Leaders can best meet the needs of all of the members of their Clan, whatever their level of experience, we ask that everyone answer all of the questions on the registration form.

All of the Clans at Twilight Covening are designed to provide deep and fulfilling experiences. Some Clans, indicated with an asterisk (*), include work that relies on past experience or is especially challenging. If you would like to apply to join one of these Clans, please let us know why it calls to you right now and include a description of your training, skills and practice with this kind of work in your application along with information about the kind of support system you have in place outside of Twilight Covening (coven, teacher, therapist, etc.). If you do not include all of this information, we cannot assign you to one of these Clans.

To fully complete the ritual of Twilight Covening, you should arrive by dinner time on Friday and must plan to stay on site until Monday afternoon so that you don't miss your Clan's final meeting or the closing circle.  Clan assignments will be finalized and mailed after the registration deadline of September 26. We will have a master list in the office; please call if you have not received your assignment by October 1st.

Twilight Covening Clans 2017
October 6-9, 2017

Barred Owl *
The ancient visiting traditions of England and beyond beg to be revived and so we shall! With song and revelry, blessings and gifts, many of these traditions are joyous, but "bad luck" awaits those who don't respond where and when they should. These ritual forms illuminate what is expected of us: We are responsible to participate in the greater good. We are expected to give gifts to those in need. We are required to cease hostilities, honor our ancestors, and joyously thank the cattle, bees, apples, laborers, etc. that work for and feed us. All of this is encoded in the songs. The Barred Owl clan will delve into these indigenous European visiting traditions, from Maying to Souling to Wassailing, learning lore, song and ritual to enrich our communities, including EarthSpirit's on-going revival of these traditions. We will sing and move actively (ranging from silliness to serious blessing in short order) in service of ritual. *Screech owl, Bard owl, Wassailing or "Maying" experience (such as a workshop) or a letter explaining your interest required.
Sarah Stockwell Arthen, Leader

Buffalo Clan
The Buffalo's majesty and sense of purpose as it moves over the land inspires us to hear Spirit’s call, and create the path that speaks to our hearts. The buffalo symbolizes manifestation, via right intention and right action. In fact, the buffalo’s work is both sacred and practical. In this clan, we will explore magickal techniques to connect with Spirit, define and experience our intention, and manifest our vision. As the buffalo travel together over the land, our clan will actively build connection with one another and with our Mountain. Using meditation, energy work, movement, art and ritual, we will walk the path we create for ourselves, and explore how our work is in service to our community. Our weekend’s work will harness the power of the seen and unseen to bring to life that which calls to us. This clan will be very physically active and will spend significant time outdoors.
This clan will share a sleeping cabin.
Tatiana and Tim Lyons, leaders

Cricket Clan
On the mountain, we will join our voices together as a chorus of crickets, each of us lending our unique voice to the web of sound we sense and create. We will spend the weekend listening to nature, learning from it, opening up our voices and entraining them with chanting and singing together. Using breath, melody, gentle movement, and trance, we will sculpt sacred sonic space for our personal work as well as the work of the larger gathering. Singing experience is not required, all you need is the ability to listen and a willingness to open to the music all around us. Add your song to our Cricket magic. Our clan will spend time outdoors.
Sarahluna, leader

Falcon Clan
In heathenry, there are various families of gods and spirits. Most people are familiar with the Aesir--Thor, Odin, Frigga. But the other tribe of gods, the Vanir, and the spirits of the Earth such as the alfar and the land wights, seem to get less attention, even though they were at least as important. In Falcon Clan we will study the lore and mythology surrounding the Vanir, the alfar, and the spirits of land and nature, and examine the practices our ancestors used to connect with these Earth-focused beings. We will create ritual tools and a ritual space, or Ve, through which to commune with these beings. The clan will focus on sharing the lore, making tools and talismans, creating rituals for connecting with the gods and spirits of the land and water, and meditation, alone or in group, with a special emphasis on lore and ritual connected to the Harvest season and the transition into winter. There is an opportunity for Falcon Clan to interact with other Clans at Twilight.
Ulfr and Trevor, leaders

Gryphon Clan*
As like attracts like sometimes we have to go to our inner darkness to release, empower, or learn the hidden truths that lie within. The Gryphon clan explores the techniques of Dark Eros, utilizing guided meditation, breathing, and physical sensation work to help us on a journey to find our winter work. The clan is designed to allow you the freedom to push your own boundaries in a safe, sane, consensual and nurturing environment. The clan is advanced, and involves techniques sometimes associated with BDSM, those with touch issues or frank discussion of human sexuality, sensuality and introspection, might find the clan too challenging.
Cerillian and Zanne, leaders

Honey Bee Clan
Honey Bees dance in circular patterns to tell the colony of nearby flowers containing nectar which they transform into life-sustaining honey. Since ancient times, people have gathered in community to dance in circles. We dance to celebrate our lives, to honor the Divine, to follow and attune to the rhythms and cycles of nature. We dance to deepen into meditative states that connect us to Spirit and the Mysteries. By dancing in a circle, the very symbol of unity and wholeness, we create sacred space to strengthen our connection to All-That-Is and to our community. By learning and dancing Sacred Circle Dances of many cultures and traditions, old and new, we will dance our path to the source of the golden honey of sweetness that will sustain us through the dark time. Much of our time will be held outdoors.
Juniper Talbot, leader

Koala Clan
Using Tarot to embrace change. In life we experience many changes; some we seek and some arrive uninvited, and often unwelcome. The ones we seek often do not turn out as we had hoped, and the ones that arrive on their own can be gifts, in the long run. We can embrace change and find a way to dance with it, rather than resisting it, clinging to what was or forcing it to fit our vision. We will learn and work with tarot techniques that can be used later for making decisions or interpreting dreams and more. No tarot experience needed. If you have a tarot deck, bring it. Extra decks will also be available for use.
Susan Curewitz Arthen, Leader

Lynx Clan
Seeing the smallest motion and hearing what is hidden, the Lynx knows the feel of its environment and relies on all of its senses to hunt at night and to avoid danger. How actively do you pay attention to what all of your senses are telling you, especially the inner non-physical senses? Learn and practice tuning in to your inner psychic vision, while still being aware of the world around you. Learn when the voice in your head isn't your own thinking. Tell the difference between worrying and a gut feeling or intuition that is telling you something new. Begin to explore ways that you can quickly tune in to what is around you with all of your physical and intuitive senses so you can choose if some action is needed. We will spend part of our clan time walking around the woods and water.
Eric Arthen, leader

Moth Clan
Whereas Butterflies bring the energy of the sun, Moths bring the energy of the Moon. It asks us to become aware of our own cycles and the tides of emotions and reactions that flow through us and our lives. Moth Clan will introduce and build on basic energy-work methods, with a focus on Daily Practice, and will use Compassion and Gratitude as focus points. Clan Times will be ritualized and will include: gentle stretching and Tai Chi based movements, Buddhist inspired Metta Meditation, energy exercises and Shamanic Journeywork.
Moths will share a sleeping cabin.
Kelley, leader

Monkey Clan
Rhythm is all around us; music is an essential facet of who we are. In Monkey Clan we shall learn to work--and play--together, bringing forth transformational sound via the drum, bell, and other percussive voices. While some drumming experience is helpful, it is not required.
This clan will share a sleeping cabin.
Mark Girard, Morwen Two Feathers, Leaders

Reindeer Clan
Immersing ourselves in the old ways of the Norse and the Saami, the Reindeer Clan will focus on traditional Scandinavian lore, as well as on runes and other sigils and symbols. Among other things, we will make and charge personal amulets with them. Working with the three elements of the northern world and trance journeying along with the beat of a drum, we will familiarize ourselves with the plant and animal spirits of the wild North, and share their rich history in the old story-telling tradition as we enter the dark time of the year. Clan members are invited to share a cabin in order to enhance the experience of being immersed in this ancient culture.
This clan will share a sleeping cabin.
Jane Sibley and Rose Starwind, leaders

Tortoise Clan
Aging and health challenges can deprive us of the physical abilities we've counted on all our lives. Where do we find our power in a fast-paced culture where the old are seen as irrelevant and the word "aging" is too often prefixed with "anti-"? Giant Tortoise moves slowly, but lives a hundred years or longer. As our bodies force us to slow down and let go of more physically active roles, what gives our lives meaning? In this Clan we will employ mirror work, gentle movement, and other techniques to explore and appreciate our changing physical and mental selves, while sharing our experience, collectively feeling our way toward wisdom. Together let us explore the ways slowing down can be an advantage, even a blessing.
Miriam Klamkin, Tchipakkan, leaders

White Raven Clan *
The White Raven is guardian of the deep Ancestral Wisdoms stored in the dark spaces within the earth, and our guide into the hidden Ancestral Memories stirring in our blood. In this clan, we draw on the lore and practices of Faery Seership to call upon this Keeper of Secrets, to guide us into the Ancestral Memory of the Underworld, and to bring us into contact with the stream of human presence known as the River of Blood. We will use simple rites to honor and engage the Ancestors, both human and other. Come prepared to engage in the redemptive work of healing our ancestral paradoxes, and invite the voices within our blood to speak. No prior experience with ancestral working is required. Some of our workings will be done during the witching hour.
Lanna Lee Maheux & Giariel Foxwood, Leaders

Wolf Clan *
Wolves are creatures of twilight, living between the spaces of night and day and seeing the world with eyes adapted for the shadows. In Wolf Clan, we too will explore the shadow times by going deep into dark landscapes. A wolf pack is a family, and we will rely on each other as we practice moving through the woods, breathing into liminal spaces, and sinking into the in-between places between human and other. Our work will focus on finding connection to each other over distance and practice communicating beyond human words. We will move together, work together, tell stories together, and howl together - exploring what it means to provide service to one's self, to the pack and to the community as a whole. This clan will be physically active, including moving through the woods during the day and night. Be prepared to work late into the night and interact closely with the other clan members.
This clan will share a sleeping cabin.
Donovan Arthen and Wolfhame (aka Adam Katrick), Leaders

Wyrm Clan
Where does your magic lie? Is it a snake, coiled in slumber, or is it a wyrm, unfurled? This clan will journey through the chakras taking a shamanic path using guided meditation, gentle movement, and subtle shapeshifting. In our work we will bring our mindfulness into our bodies, and awareness to the obstacles blocking our energy meridians. What stands between you and spirit? In Wyrm Clan, we will transform these blocks allies as we strengthen our connection to the greater web of magic.
This clan will share a cabin.
