Twilight Covening
October 7-10, 2005

Twilight Covening is both a continual three-day ritual and a three-day institute of earth-spirituality. It is a time for exploring ways to deepen earth-centered spiritual practice and a time to develop our collective wisdom in a shared sacred space.

Created in 1986, Twilight Covening continues to evolve and change. Each year a devoted group of people committed to a spirituality rooted in the earth gather to explore the depths of their practices, learn new skills together and experience the joy and power of a living community ritual. The culminating Visioning Ritual carries each of us deeper into ourselves and into communion with this time of year and with all of Nature.

The intensive work of Twilight Covening takes place in Clans and in community-wide rituals that flow together through the weekend. Clans are groups of ten to twenty people who work with a chosen focus or technique to learn further and deepen their spiritual practice while also contributing to daily life by preparing a meal, tending the fire and contributing to the community rituals. These rituals include:

A Releasing Fire on Friday night,
Trance Dance, Clear Space and Dreamcircle on Saturday night,
The Visioning Ritual on Sunday night
Each day, four "Attunements", which mark the solar quarters of the day

Twilight Covening is held in the autumn because of the strong natural transition taking place all around us from light into dark, summer into winter, and outward focus to inward contemplation. During the gathering, we use this current of change, along with our focused practices, to find inspiration and insight that can feed us in the dark months to come and motivate us to make changes that we can use to deepen our own spiritual practice.

Many participants have found that Twilight Covening is a wonderful opportunity for developing strong and lasting connections with others on a similar path (some Clans stay in touch for years…) and that it provides a model for maintaining an earth-centered practice on a daily basis.

The Site

We will return to the site of last years' Twilight Covening,, a camp in the beautiful Berkshires on a small private lake with several indoor common spaces, and woods for walking. The spectacular foliage at this time of year adds a touch of brilliance to the magic of this lovely setting.

The Director

Deirdre Pulgram Arthen, a Witch for 25 years and Beldame of the Glain Sidhr Order, is one of the directors of EarthSpirit and partner in Tamelin Productions with Andras Corban Arthen. She coordinates Twilight Covening, selecting and overseeing all of the clan leaders and shaping the Visioning ritual on Sunday night.
