Twilight Covening in Autumn

Twilight Covening
October 8-11, 2021

Registration is Paused
Due to the need to limit the size of Twilight Covening in the interest of health and safety, and an outpouring of early responses, registration is now on pause. We are creating a waiting list.
If you have recently attended at Twilight Covening, keep an eye on your email for more information.
Thank you for your interest and understanding.

In the twilight of the year, we gather together to set time apart from our daily lives for study, reflection, dreaming, and seeking visions.

A time apart.
Feel the current of change
As the season turns.
Flow with the tide.
Find yourself held in community,
Honoring the spirit of the Earth.
Breathe in the cool crisp air
Cross the bridge from autumn
Into the dark of winter.
Step into a three-day ritual of deep spiritual connection, learning and magic.

Twilight Covening is a continuous  3-day ritual which holds and shapes an institute of Earth spirituality and a time to develop our collective wisdom in a shared sacred space as we move into the dark time of the year.

Each year since 1986, members of the EarthSpirit Community gather deep into ourselves and into communion with this time of year and with all of Nature. We explore the depths of a range of spiritual practices, learn new skills together and experience the joy and power of a living community ritual. We invite you to join us.

Twilight Covening is held in the autumn during the strong natural transition taking place all around us from light into dark, summer into winter, and outward focus to inward contemplation. During the gathering, we use this current of change, along with our focused practices, to find inspiration and insight that can feed us in the dark months to come and motivate us to make changes that we can use to deepen our own spiritual practice.

The intensive work of Twilight Covening takes place in practice-specific Clans of 10-20 people and in full-community rituals that flow together through the weekend.

The rituals include:

  • Releasing Fire Ritual on Friday night,
  • Rituals for Dreaming, Healing and Trance on Saturday night,
  • A Visioning Ritual on Sunday night
  • Four "Attunements" each day which mark the solar quarters of the day

Many participants have found that Twilight Covening provides a model for maintaining an earth-centered practice on a daily basis and is a wonderful opportunity for developing strong and lasting connections with others on a similar path.

COVID Protocol

This year the application process for Twilight Covening includes a requirement that each applicant certify that they have been fully vaccinated against COVID. We will require that each participant show documentation of this fact, upon arrival. We also reserve the right to require evidence of a negative PCR test should health conditions in Massachusetts change closer to the event. If you want to attend but are medically unable to get vaccinated, due to immune-deficiency or allergies, please indicate that on your application and we will contact you before the event to discuss the matter individually.

Please do not come if you are sick or if you have travelled to high risk areas in the 2 weeks before Twilight Covening.  If you get sick you have to go home. Please be sure to Inform us if you get sick afterwards.  We hold each other by paying attention to our own and others’ safety - by washing hands and asking before close contact, like hugging.

Most Clan activities and community rituals will take place outdoors this year. Please bear this in mind when considering whether attending is the right choice for you. We suggest that everyone bring extra warm layers and good rain gear (tops and pants), just in case.

Masks will be required at times in indoor settings during the event.  Please plan to bring several 2 or 3-layer, non-vented, cloth masks with you that you can hand-wash daily. Some disposable back-ups will be available.

Overall attendance at Covening will be limited for extra safety indoors, and all Clans will also be limited in size this year to maintain smaller groupings. Attendees will eat with Clan members during the event and some Clans may have shared sleeping space available as well.

Choosing your Twilight Covening Clan

Make sure that you read over all of the Clan descriptions carefully. There are many wonderful possibilities.

On your registration form, you will need to list five Clans as possible choices for the weekend. This year, since Clan size is limited, it is less likely than usual that you will get your first choice. Please be ready to be flexible!  It is important that you indicate five preferences since we assign the Clans primarily on a first-come first-served basis and some will fill up quickly. Some Clans may also be cancelled due to lack of demand in a particular year.

Number your preferences from 1 to 5, with 1 being your first choice. Registration forms which are filled out incompletely will only delay processing time, making it less likely that first choices will be available. So that Clan Leaders can best meet the needs of all of the members of their Clan, whatever their level of experience, we ask that everyone answer all of the questions on the registration form.

All of the Clans at Twilight Covening are designed to provide deep and fulfilling experiences. Some Clans, indicated with an asterisk (*), include work that relies on past experience or is especially challenging. If you would like to apply to join one of these Clans, please let us know why it calls to you right now and include information about your training, skills and practice with this kind of work in your application along with information about the kind of support system you have in place outside of Twilight Covening (coven, teacher, therapist, etc.). If you do not include all of this information, we cannot assign you to one of these Clans.

To fully complete the ritual of Twilight Covening, you should arrive by dinner time on Friday and must plan to stay on site until Monday afternoon so that you don’t miss your Clan’s final meeting or the closing circle. Clan assignments will be finalized and mailed after the registration deadline of September 26. We will have a master list in the office; please call if you have not received your assignment by October 2.

Twilight Covening 2021 Clan List

Arctic Wolf Clan - this clan is full
The úlfhéðnar were Scandinavian warriors and shapeshifters who wore wolf fur into battle, matching their “lich” (physical body) to their “hame” (energetic shape).  While the traditions of these wolf warriors have been lost, we can find the legacy of their deeds and travels in surviving sagas.  In the Arctic Wolf Clan we will seek the in-between world that the úlfhéðnar occupied - something not human, but also not entirely “other”.  We will ask the questions: What really defines our identity? How do we incorporate deep personal changes and revelations into the self we show to the world? What happens if we allow our “otherness” to become part of who we are in the world everyday? Like the wolf warriors, we will seek answers through expression and embodiment -- a combination of movement, connection, and trance state.  We will explore stories to find their resonance in our own lives and practices. And like the ancient Scandinavians, we will witness each other in Heathen ritual, where our ancestors, the spirits of the land, and the gods are invited to hear our stories and witness our growth.
Nikolas Wolfhame Katrick and Irene Glasse, leaders

Aurochs Clan
"What then is the root of poetry and every other wisdom? Not hard; three cauldrons are born in every person -- the cauldron of warming, the cauldron of motion and the cauldron of wisdom."
A modern practice based on early Irish thought, the Three Cauldrons is a meditative technique, a self-awareness tool, and an energetic practice focused around the three cauldrons of energy within the self. In Aurochs clan we will seek to stir up the energies of each cauldron, introduce ourselves to it, and move into actively using the energies of each cauldron.. Clan members should expect to spend a fair amount of time outside and be comfortable with moderate physical exertion.
Brannen, leader

Barred Owl Clan
The ancient visiting traditions of England and beyond beg to be revived and so we shall! With song and revelry, blessings and gifts, these traditions are fundamentally joyous. But ill-luck, and even shunning, awaits those who spurn proper behavior toward community, land and animals. The older traditional behaviors revealed in this body of lore teach us how to live such values, and the ways of mystery. We are expected to give to those in need. We are required to cease hostilities, honor our ancestors, and joyously thank the cattle, bees, fruit, laborers, etc. for our sustenance. All of this is encoded in the songs.
The Barred Owl clan will delve into these indigenous European visiting traditions – from Maying to Souling to Wassailing – joyfully re-learning old ways as a means of resisting and replacing our materialist, individualist, domination-focused modern culture. *Clan members should be sufficiently physically able to comfortably move around on the rough land of the site when we go “a-visiting.”
Sarah Stockwell-Arthen - leader

Bat Clan - this clan is full
Bats have long been associated with the underworld, with the dark and night, and with witches. They often live in caves — portals to other worlds — and get their information about the world  differently from other creatures, sending out signals and reading the results to know where they are, and how to navigate the world around them.
Bat Clan examines divination and considers what divination is. How and where do we get our information? We’ll work primarily with the tarot to open our awareness of what the world offers by way of messages and guidance beyond the “normal” ways of seeing and hearing things. We’ll take a brief look at numbers, astrology, nature, and other sources of divination, and deal with them on their own and in relationship to each other. This clan is for all levels (including true beginners) of tarot experience.
Chris LaFond, Leader

Bear Clan - this clan is full
Bear clan members will spend the majority of their time out in the woods; learning basic knife skills, woodland arts, and pushing themselves to their limits while packing only what they need. Bears will be invited to dwell deep within their caves, reflecting upon what burdens are theirs versus those placed upon them, be they encumbrances of the body, mind, or spirit and emerging with a clearer story of self. Clan members should plan to spend at least one night outdoors.
Snorri and Mark Girard leaders

Dragonfly Clan - this clan is full
Dragonflies spend two thirds of their lives in water, and have what’s known as an Incomplete Life Cycle, going directly from Larva to Adult. Often people who resonate with Dragonfly energy skip over portions of their development, grow up too fast, have bypassed common markers, or missed steps not limited to their teenage years. We carry within us the ability to visualize emotional depths while hovering over the surface, reinforcing or rewriting our personal narrative. Through meditative and trust exercises this clan will identify gaps in our spiritual development, and redefine our relationships to old labels. With fresh perspectives we will replenish ourselves, purify our intentions, and carry the work home. This Clan will offer shared sleeping space.
Omdog and Lynn Mahoney Rowan, leaders

Forest Cat Clan
The Forest Cat slips easily between the world of the wild, and that of men, at home in a tree top, or a lap, never wasting energy on useless movements or sounds. The practice of RunValdr: the Way of Using Runes, gives us access to the powers of the ancient runes. With a drawn symbol or two we can heal, pass into other worlds, make magickal objects, and more. RunValdr does not claim to be safe; there are claws within the velvet paw.  Traditionally, rune's were used to curse as well as to heal, and will do what they do without expending a whit more energy than needed. This clan will explore this system like the curious cat, and patiently practice, so that when we leave we may carry the power silently within us, ready to make whatever world we walk in our own.
Tchipakkan, leader

Honey Badger Clan - this clan is full
Honey badgers are fierce and they fight to stand up for themselves. This clan will take that fierce energy and channel it into healing humor. We will incorporate storytelling and laughter and will raise our proverbial skirts to thumb our noses at adversity and at others’ expectations, whether because of gender, queerness, or whateverelseness. We will shift conversations by using humor, we will embrace bawdy positivity, and will delight ourselves when things are not otherwise delightful. We will explore the Baubo myth and embawdy her example. We encourage the participation of persons of all genders and welcome the opportunity to help make the feminine archetypes work for you. Some of our workings will be done during the witching hour.
Michele Abazorius Whitaker & Lanna Lee Maheux, leaders

Junco Clan
We rely on our relationship with the trees.  They change the air that we breathe, provide shelter and sustenance, shade and constancy, and in some traditions the trees are our oldest ancestors.  Despite the past year or the anticipated isolation of the coming winter, our inherent, intimate relationship with the trees remains.  In Junco Clan, we will reach out to the tree spirits, explore the myriad facets of our relationship, and commune with the trees of the mountain.  Junco Clan will practice outside, walking and engaging in gentle movement as we immerse ourselves.
Trey Wentworth and Rose Starwind, leaders

Lynx Clan - this clan is full
Seeing the smallest motion and hearing what is hidden, the Lynx knows the feel of its environment and relies on all of its senses to hunt at night and to avoid danger. How actively do you pay attention to what all of your senses are telling you, especially the inner non-physical senses?  Learn and practice tuning in to your inner psychic vision, while still being aware of the world around you. Learn when the voice in your head isn't your own thinking. Tell the difference between worrying and a gut feeling or intuition that is telling you something new.  Begin to explore ways that you can quickly tune in to what is around you with all of your physical and intuitive senses so you can choose if some action is needed. We will spend part of our clan time walking around the woods and water.
Eric Arthen, leader

Night Heron Clan* - this clan is full
Wading in a liminal world, herons bring stillness and patience. Not a passive patience, but an active one where we can open to perceive and journey beyond the mundane to explore and learn from the mystery. The Heron clan will work with extended periods of trance approaching it from several different aspects. After the trance dance, we will spend all night in the forest breathing in the mystery and will greet a new day, opening to the possibilities and soft breath of dawn. Members of this clan should have some prior experience with trance, and the ability to re-center themselves after a trance experience.
Moira Ashleigh, leader

Pillbug Clan
Like the pillbug burrows into the earth for nourishment and restoration, this clan will sink into the layers of the mountain over the weekend. We will use both guided journeys and gentle moving meditations, drawing on the energies of ancestor, tree, stone, and star to bring us closer and deeper into our own ability to nourish and renew ourselves. The moving meditations are accessible for all mobility levels.
Sarah Lyn, leader

Porpoise Clan
Ready to dive deeper into tarot? How about Porpoise clan?  Well adapted for diving to great depths, porpoises use a “sixth sense” of echolocation as their primary sensory system.  With meditative and contemplative practice, we will open to an intuitive sensory experience of tarot interpretation. You will delve deeper into a specific card to create a new pathway into its energy and the message it brings to your readings. By embodying your impressions, you will develop a relationship with and greater understanding of its essence, fostering a connection with the stories the tarot tells you, and adding depth and richness to your interpretations. This group is suitable for both the curious as well as the experienced. Please bring a tarot deck and a journal. We will be outside a fair bit, as weather allows.
Sarahluna Magdalene, leader

Ptarmigan Clan - this clan is full
The acrid smoke arising from a small forge and the sound of a smith's hammer beating on orange-hot iron waft through the fall air, as the members of Ptarmigan Clan explore ritual smith-craft, including hands-on work at the anvil. We will explore the transformative power of fire and the process of change through the influence of one's will, Voyaging to the hammer's beat, and following the path of the Cosmic Smith. We will kindle sacred/New Fire not only for our Clan use, but also for the Community.  Northern European forge-craft traditions and magic will be a part of this weekend, and this clan is open to all. Handicap-accessible.
Jane Sibley and Ed (Happy Cat) Wilson, leaders.

Salamander Clan - this clan is full
First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is. (Zen koan).
How do we perceive the world around us? What is real? As a salamander experiences life both in water and on land, moving between the two as needed, reality can also be experienced on different levels, and ritual is a method of moving between them. Beyond engagement with language, symbols, incense and chants is a kind of awareness that enables us to use those tools in a way that both intensifies the experience and makes it more meaningful and able to actually transform us. In this Clan we will work to break out of our preconceptions about reality and practice techniques that will help us achieve and hold onto that alternate awareness.
Andras Corban Arthen and Donovan Arthen, leaders

Spider Clan - this clan is full
The mandalic form of the Spider's web is one of the most beautiful and powerful creations of any animal. Comprised of the strongest bio-material found in nature, the web is focal point of transformation, serving as both nursery and death trap. The spider can feel distant reverberations in the web and has many eyes for deep seeing. In this clan we will explore the act of creation in ritual and magic. We will observe patterns and energies in the world around us and translate them into symbolic forms.  Experience as a visual artist is welcome but by no means a requisite.  Martin Bridge and Kaye Kittredge, leaders

Nikolas Wolfhame Katrick (Arctic Wolf Clan) is a thane and Gesith (guardian) of the Heathen kindred Chase Hill. He is a werewolf in love with the mystery of wild places and a guide on the bridge to the more-than-human world of identity. As a carpenter, writer, gardener, outdoor guide, fire & rescue officer, nonprofit professional, and educator, he wears too many hats (and has fun doing it). Telling and listening to stories, talking about anthropomorphism, scheming up new projects, and spending time with beloved communities makes his tail wag.
